Communications and Research Coordinator

Position Overview: 

This position will be responsible for coordinating the MFL’s news media, member engagement and public relations activities, as well as the MFL’s research and policy development work. This position will work under direction of the MFL's Executive Director and elected President as part of a small staff team dedicated to advancing the priorities of the MFL’s affiliated unions and the interests and well-being of working people.

Candidates must have:

  • A diploma in communications and/or relevant research-based degree, with a minimum of 5 years of experience working in a direct communications field.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communications skills, and experience working in a variety of communications areas, including speech writing, member relations, media relations, social media, and public campaigns.
    • Graphic design experience is considered an asset.
    • Photography experience is considered an asset.
    • Website management experience is considered an asset.
  • Background in research and analysis, and have the ability to research, develop and present well thought out, concise arguments and policy positions on complex and diverse labour issues.
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite is required.
    • Familiarity with the Adobe Creative Suite is considered an asset.
  • A good understanding of the structure, principles and objectives of central labour bodies, the roles of the MFL, and current labour issues.
  • An ability to multi-task and manage a workload with competing deadlines and priorities.
  • An ability to work independently, as well as within a team.
  • An ability to monitor media and social media on a continual basis, including after hours and on weekends.
  • • An ability to manage sensitive and confidential information appropriately.
Representative Duties: 
  • Prepare media releases, statements, articles, speeches, letters, mass emails, brochures and posters.
  • Research and write policy briefs, reports and position papers on labour issues and policy topics.
  • Develop effective media, social media and public relations profile and campaigns for the MFL.
  • Manage the MFL’s website and social media presence (includes – creating new and engaging news, information, events, actions and other creative content to engage and inform MFL affiliates, workers and the public).
  • Assist the MFL in developing and implementing outreach programs to affiliates and like-minded groups.
  • Monitor media and social media and coordinate appropriate responses and management of issues as they arise.
  • Liaise with MFL affiliates to ensure effective communications on issues of concern.
  • Provide staff support to the MFL Executive Council, Committees, affiliates and other partner organizations/groups.
