Making Your Workplace Safer – Action on Health and Safety

Pushing for changes to ensure safe and healthy workplaces is a priority for the MFL, including stepped-up enforcement of existing health and safety laws, like the Westray law.

Enforcing the Westray Law (“Kill a Worker – Go to Jail”)

In 2003, Parliament unanimously passed what has come to be known as the “Westray Law.” Under that law, employers responsible for workplace deaths can face criminal charges, and if convicted, can be sentenced to time in prison. In 2012, a special investigation by the MFL revealed that the law had been largely unenforced; not a single charge had been laid Manitoba. The MFL has been lobbying the provincial government and police to do what’s need to ensure every workplace death is investigated through the lens of the Westray law. Find out more HERE and HERE
