May 13th Transit Day in Canada

May 8, 2014

Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1505, bargaining agent for most employees at Winnipeg Transit, is holding a Pro-Transit Rally at 8am on Tuesday May 13, 2014 in front of the new Osbourne Street Station which is on a new bridge over Osborne Street near Osborne Junction (Confusion Corner).

It part of a cross-Canada day of action by ATU to draw public attention to the fact that the nation’s public transit system needs to be greatly enhanced in order to let people leave their cars at home and take the public tranist system to work or other activities.

The benefits are enormous:

  • Over-all pollution goes down
  • Carbon emissions are reduced
  • Traffic congestion is reduced
  • There are fewer fatalities and injuries due to motor vehicle accidents
  • The amount of valuable city property devoted to parking lots is reduced
  • Healthy life-styles are promoted (bicycles and similar devices are safer to use)

To enhance our public transit system needs political will (and courage) from politicians at all levels of government to make the necessary investment in it.  Call them, e-mail them, and send them a letter via Canada Post to make sure they get the message.

Show you support for public transit on May 13th!  Bring your union flags, banners and your union sisters and brothers!
