Numerous Issues Covered by May MFL Executive Council Meeting

Thursday, June 3, 2010

The Manitoba Federation of Labour Executive Council May 2010 meeting was held in Dauphin on May 27 and 28. Each year, the MFL Executive meets at a location outside of Winnipeg for one of its four annual meetings.

At the May meeting, Kelly Moist (facing camera in photo on left) - a new representative for CUPE - was sworn in by CLC Representative Deborah Jamerson. Sister Moist replaces CUPE Representative Val McArthur who stepped down after many years of service on the MFL Executive.

Re-establishing the Dauphin area Labour Coordinating Committee was brainstormed by Executive Council members following a presentation from local labour activists.

Representatives of the Dauphin Community Cinema Inc. organization made a presentation to the meeting, seeking the support of labour to develop a state-of-the-art multi-use facility to serve the residents of the Dauphin area. It will include a four screen cinema complex to show first-run films using digital and 3D technology. The non-profit organization is in the midst of a $3 million fund raising project to begin construction of the facility.

United Food and Commercial Workers Local 832, which has many members in the Dauphin area, pledged $5000 to the project following the presentation and urged other unions to provide support as well.
