On Friday, March 4, the UFCW Local 832 members working at the Diageo plant in Gimli voted 98 per cent to reject the company’s final offer.

On February 3 members voted 100 per cent to give the bargaining committee strike mandate if a fair deal could not be reached. The strike mandate helped move bargaining during the last round of talks but both sides couldn’t reach an agreement.

“Our members go to work every day with the mindset that they are making world’s greatest whisky. The membership believes that if the company put the same effort into this round of bargaining we wouldn’t be on strike,” stated UFCW Local 832 President Jeff Traeger.

Wage increases, vacation time and health and welfare benefits remained sticking points on getting a deal done.

Workers will begin walking the picket line effective Saturday March 5.
