MGEU Info Bulletin:

As you are likely well aware, a strike date has been set for Macdonald Youth Services (MYS) following inaction from this new government in terms of honoring the commitment that was made to the MGEU in April 2016.

The previous government committed to a wage increase for four years for these workers, which is just a small step towards addressing some of the inequities that currently exist. Those who provide similar services to adults through the WRHA, for instance, make approximately $10 more per hour.

Members of MYS local 221 provide a valuable public service helping vulnerable kids and their families. They also help young girls who’ve been sexually exploited into safe places so they are no longer in harm’s way.

Following an information picket on July 11, 2016 and the announcement of a strike date on July 15, 2016, this provincial government has still refused to get back to the table and has left MYS with no other option than to strike.

MYS Local 221 will officially take strike action on August 2, 2016 at 8:00am unless a deal can be reached.

Strike picket dates have already been selected and will start on August 2, 2016. We will have two groups striking in two locations Tuesday to Friday the first week and Monday to Friday thereafter.

Group 1 = 10:00am – 2:00pm (4 hours, 5 times a week) @ 491 Portage Ave. (temporary head office for MYS)
Group 2 = 2:00pm – 6:00pm (4 hours, 5 times a week) @ 226 St. Mary’s (MYS Community Office)

Please show your support and solidarity for our fellow brothers and sisters by walking the picket line with them. Updates on the strike will be posted on our website, www.mgeu.ca. We will also be active on facebook and twitter, so please follow #MYStrike.

Please share this information with all affiliates of the MFL and ask them to come out in support. If you have any questions or concerns please contact me through the MGEU Resource Centre at 204-982-6438

Thank-you in advance.

In Solidarity,
Michelle
