MFL celebrates 50 years of United Steelworkers local 6166

November 16, 2012

During the recent MFL Health and Safety Conference in Thompson, the MFL organized a social to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the United Steelworkers Local 6166.

MFL President kevin Rebeck presented Local 6166 President Murray Nychoporuk with a plaque commemorating fifty years of dedicated service to workers, their families and the community.

Brother Rebeck emphasized the leadership role that local 6166 plays well beyond the workplace. The union plays a large role in Thompson community affairs, has established a template for workers in other Northern communities, and has been active and influential participant in the broader Manitoba labour movement.

USW local 6166 set up a display of fascinating union memorabilia at the MFL social, including newsletters from the 1960s and 70s, as well as union gear, mining crafts and jerseys from the popular union hockey league.
