MFL supports “From Winnipeg to Washington” initiative

October 4, 2013

The Manitoba Federation of Labour has donated $1,000 to support the “From Winnipeg to Washington” initiative.

“From Winnipeg to Washington” will send ten inner-city Winnipeg youth on an educational trip to Washington, DC hosted by Gary Doer, Canada’s Ambassador to the United States. The four day tour will include visits to the Smithsonian, the Holocaust Museum, the Lincoln Memorial, the White House and the Canadian Embassy.

The tour was conceived by Ginny Devine, local business owner and wife of Doer, and Kevin Chief, Manitoba’s Minister of Children and Youth Opportunities.

Trip participants will be youth leaders at the Winnipeg Aboriginal Sport Achievement Centre. The Winnipeg Free Press reports that Sterling Muskego, 21, is one of the 10 people making the trip: “Muskego said he’s struck by the fundraising support the trip is getting, and admits he’s a little star-struck by Doer and Devine. ‘It was awesome meeting Gary and Ginny. And that barbecue, that’s going to be interesting. Not many people get that opportunity. It’s going to be cool.'”

Minister Chief is helping raise funds to pay for the trip. $30,000 is needed to cover flights, hotel costs and meals.

A fundraising social for the trip is being held on October 12. It will include live entertainment, silent auction, a 50/50 draw and great food.
