The Manitoba Federation of Labour Executive Council May 2010 meeting was held in Dauphin on May 27 and 28. Each year, the MFL Executive meets at a location outside of Winnipeg for one of its four annual meetings.
At the May meeting, Kelly Moist (facing camera in photo on left) – a new representative for CUPE – was sworn in by CLC Representative Deborah Jamerson. Sister Moist replaces CUPE Representative Val McArthur who stepped down after many years of service on the MFL Executive.
Re-establishing the Dauphin area Labour Coordinating Committee was brainstormed by Executive Council members following a presentation from local labour activists.
Representatives of the Dauphin Community Cinema Inc. organization made a presentation to the meeting, seeking the support of labour to develop a state-of-the-art multi-use facility to serve the residents of the Dauphin area. It will include a four screen cinema complex to show first-run films using digital and 3D technology. The non-profit organization is in the midst of a $3 million fund raising project to begin construction of the facility.
United Food and Commercial Workers Local 832, which has many members in the Dauphin area, pledged $5000 to the project following the presentation and urged other unions to provide support as well.
