Working people in Manitoba have lost a dedicated champion with the passing of long-time Steelworker Eugene Laye.
Eugene was born August 27, 1935, and passed at 7:00 a.m., November 14, 2015 after a courageous and hard fought battle with leukemia, his wife by his side.
Eugene is survived by his best friend and wife of 31 years, Marion Laye; children, Cindy Laye, Randy Laye, Heather Bell (Ryan); sister Jeanette Cyr; grandchildren, Serena Laye, Vanessa Laye, Jacob Laye, Jana Bell; great-grandchildren Connor Laye, Pavarti Laye, Jayden Bell; mother-in-law Mulvina Hardwick; four sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was predeceased by his mother Mary Laye; father Mike Laye; brother Eddie Laye, and father-in-law Walter Hardwick.
Eugene was an accomplished negotiator for the United Steelworkers of America and was passionate about his career and family. He was a great speaker and advocator for all those who had the opportunity to know and work with him.
Eugene loved to hunt and was an elite member of the “Kaker Hunting Club”. He enjoyed golfing with the “group of eight”, entertaining with family and friends, traveling the world and helping out at his son’s shop whenever he could.
Eugene was also an active and dedicated member of the Anglican Church. A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 21, 2015 in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, 309 Eveline St., Selkirk, MB at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow. Rev. Vincent Solomon will officiate the ceremony.
