Tories Vote Against Protection for Temporary Workers

June 3, 2014

The Selinger Government has introduced Bill 50 – The Protection for Temporary Help Workers Act to reduce the likelihood of them being abused or victimized, and to make sure there are no roadblocks preventing them from getting permanent jobs.

The new law regulates temporary help agencies by:

  • regulating the charging of conversion fees charged when a worker is offered permanent employment by a client of the temporary help agency,
  • extending notice of termination and pay obligation rights to workers, and
  • requiring that temporary employment agencies be licensed by Manitoba Labour and Immigration.

These are kinds of things that help with creating good jobs and building a strong economy.

That’s not good enough for the Tories in the Legislature under the leadership of Brian Pallister.  He and his Caucus have voted against Bill 50 on at least two occasions and will likely oppose it again during the thrird and final vote before the end of the session.  Keeping their friends happy seems to be more important to the Conservatives than protecting vulnerable workers.
